The last leg before the cafe stop is a long stretch on the river‘s east levee road, which is highly unusual for club rides. Ride starts from the NE corner of the parking lot. East Sac‘s answer to Whitey‘s Jolly Kone is Cookie‘s Drive in, a modest take-out-only joint near CSUS that‘s been serving up fancy burgers and arguably the area‘s best, thickest shakes for 65 years. As with Whitey‘s, Cookie‘s opens at 11, so the ride leaves at 9:30. The route loops through Land Park, Downtown and East Sac before returning via Meadowview and the Pocket. We usually start with the warm up loop which takes a little under an hour, so I‘ll be at bel Air at 10:00 for anyone wanting to sign in then.
This ride will complete my 2024 challenge for leading some rides. I like the format for a variety of reasons, but since it rarely draws many riders, I will probably rarely schedule it in 2025. However, the routes are in the Bike Hikers RWGPS library and I have plenty of printed cue sheets available for anyone wanting to use these excellent routes (that I did not create) for hill training and workouts.
After heading south to the Freeport bridge and a long haul on the River Road, we‘ll stop by this corner cafe in old Broderick. Typical return through the west end of Land Park. Ride starts from the NE corner of the parking lot. Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/44764828

Steamboat Landing is located on the west shore at the mouth of Steamboat Slough, about a mile south of Courtland. Northwest corner of parking lot next to Steady Eddy’s near Railroad Ave. and Abbey St. in Winters.
This ride goes to the Pure Grain Bakery in downtown Vacaville and returns a different route to Winters for an optional refreshment at Hooby’s Brewing in Winters, ergo the name. Cantelow Rd is open again, so the long route will go in the usual clockwise direction (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41429096). The distance is about 44 miles with 2,000 ft climbing. The short route has not changed and goes around the English Hills in a clockwise direction staying on the lower rollers in the English Hills. It’s 36 miles with about 1000 ft climbing (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41429095). The two routes split at Steiger Hill and Cantelow Rd. The climbs up Cantelow Rd on the long route are up and back to the top from both sides, so you can just turn around if it becomes too difficult. Also, if you want you can do both climbs on Cantelow Rd before the rest stop by continuing on after climbing to the top and then turn around at Pleasant Valley Rd at the bottom.

The route stops in old West Sacramento for a blast from the past, Whitey‘s Jolly Kone. This hamburger/hot dog/fries stand may have opened in 1963 but it‘s got a real ‘40s-‘50s vibe. What make it really stand out are its unusual milkshake flavors, including banana, blackberry, Butterfinger, butterscotch, cherry and peanut butter. There are also sundaes of various types and soft serve cones. Also available are a number of burgers, dogs, burritos, tacos and tostadas and a handful of side dishes. Health food it ain‘t, but the menu will take you back to the days when you could pig out on this stuff and not gain an ounce. This is classified as a lunch ride, but do what you want. Since this joint opens at 11, the ride always starts at 9:30 so we can arrive slightly early to get in line. Ride starts from the NE corner of the parking lot. Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42762312
Note: Registration deadline is 12 hours prior to the ride start.
We‘ll head to the wilds of East Sac to a quaint little mom-‘n‘-pop market-cum-cafe that offers a secluded patio where we can park the bikes and have a coffee/tea and a bit of a nosh. Ride starts from the NE corner of the parking lot. Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40752080
Note: Registration deadline is 12 hours prior to the ride start.

From Barrio we head to posh East Sac and swing through somewhat less-posh Oak Park before making a pit stop at Freeport Bakery (or Marie‘s Donuts if preferred) and wending our way back to Greenhaven via the Pocket. A moderate pace suitable for less-energetic boppers is expected. Ride starts from the NE corner of the parking lot. Route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40704517

Come join me on this easy flat ride out to Lenise’s Cafe in West Sacramento. All routes will be taking the new Del Rio bike trail down to Freeport. There are short and long gravel and road routes. Both gravel routes get on the levees along the Sacramento River and the deep water channel. These gravel routes are still mostly paved, so gravel or cyclocross bikes are best, but a mountain bike may work if you’re fast.
Gravel, short: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46794611
Gravel, long: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46794698
Short and long routes for road bikes are still an option.
Road, short: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46794778
Road, long: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/46794841
The short and long routes separate after crossing the Freeport Bridge. The short routes turn right on South River Rd and head towards West Sacramento, with the gravel route staying on the levee when it turns to gravel. The long routes turn left on South River Rd. and then right on either Pumphouse Rd. (gravel) or Willow Point Rd. (road) before heading back to West Sacramento. After Lenise’s Cafe the routes separate again with the gravel routes getting on the levee along the deep water channel and the road routes staying on the streets. All the routes come together on South River Rd at the end of Village Parkway and then cross over the Tower Bridge and return through Land Park getting on the north end of the Del Rio bike trail by Riverside Blvd and taking it down to 35th Ave. I will sweep the short gravel route. If you plan to do one of the other routes I recommend that you ride with someone.
