At least half of the Barrio rides listed on the schedule don't occur due to an absence of registrations. As a result, because of how I cycle through my library of about 20 routes, we might visit some of the ride destinations just a few times a year--if all all--because those routes often happen to be scheduled on days when no one registers.
Per the club's default listing method, the destination for a given ride is determined in advance and identified in the description. I'm floating the following idea:
Rather than lock in a specific route for any given date, I would bring cuesheets for, say, six routes to the ride start, one of which would be chosen by attendee consensus. Most of my rides are interchangeable since they have the same start time and roughly the same duration. A few rides start at 9:30 or 10 (due to the opening time of the destinations), and those routes could still be offered occasionally on either a ranked-choice basis (although in this case there would be fewer than six from which to choose) or the standard predetermined basis.
This would eliminate the cumbersome process of building a preset schedule each quarter and give riders a say about where we're headed.
I used to do lots of riding with a club based in Palo Alto; among my favorites was the Tuesday Loop ride, co-lead for many years by Pete Blasberg and Carol Shaw. (Today it's known as the "Shaw-Blasberg's Tuesday Loop" ride.) The day's route and destination would be (and still is) announced at the start. No route sheet was provided--but most riders knew the area well and those who didn't (like myself) could just follow along.
That differs from my idea in that attendees would determine the route, but the similarity is that the Barrio rides would usually be listed as a *series* with the ride description either listing the routes to be offered for that day or simply stating that attendees would be choosing from whatever options were made available.
I ask interested parties to weigh in on the topic ASAP because I have to post next quarter's rides within a week. If response is insufficient, no change will be made to the listing protocol.
